SUZANNE CHAUNDY

Director

NIDA trained, Suzanne‘s thirty-year directing career has spanned opera, text-based theatre and outdoor spectacle. Her opera direction credits include THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO and DON PASQUALE for the West Australian Opera, LA BOHÉME for Opera Australia and COSI FAN TUTTE for the Victoria State Opera and Melbourne Opera. Recently for Melbourne Opera she has directed DER FREISCHÜTZ, MARIA STUARDA, THE ABDUCTION FROM THE SERAGLIO, TANNHÄUSER (Opera Chaser Outstanding Production 2016), ANNA BOLENA, LOHENGRIN (Opera Chaser Outstanding Independent Production 2017) ROBERTO DEVEREUX ,TRISTAN UND ISOLDE and in 2019, THE FLYING DUTCHMAN . She was Artistic Director of Stonnington Opera from 2014 to 2016. Other recent work includes DE STROYED, created with actress Jillian Murray & video artist Zoe Scoglio, premiering at fortyfive downstairs in May 2018 andthe world premiere production of THE DRESSMAKER (a musical adaptation of the novel by Rosalie Ham) as part of MLIVE 2018.  

 

Suzanne has served on Boards for Anthill Theatre, Strange Fruit, Platform Youth Theatre and Chair of Theatre Works. 

 

She is the chair and runs an annual Opera Director’s Development Program for Lyric. Productions directed for Lyric include the Australian premiere of Malcolm Williamson’s OUR MAN IN HAVANA.  

 

Currently she is Director of the Richard Divall Emerging Opera Artists Program and directing NORMA for Melbourne Opera which opens September 17that the Athenaeum Theatre.
